Sure it is totally obsolete but it’s as they like to say “a work of Art” It’s such a good painting that we can still look back at it and say “Fuck damn, now thats a painting!” This painting has joined an esteemed part of the discourse of Art. It is considered part of the “Art historical” If you are serious about making Art you are expected to know this piece and what the artist was tweeting here.
I’m a total bro for ya so let me give you the low down. This was a school of Art called the German Romantic. It was pretty different from English Romantic painting. The English were much more concerned with the changes of industrialization and mechanization of the world. The german guys came a little later and focused more on the spiritual aspects of nature. Both schools were totally indie at the time.They wanted to move away from the artist himself as a interpreted of the world. They felt that nature in its purest form should be shown and considered. They allowed for the naturalist landscape to be considered a higher form of art.
TLDR; Hipster artists react to mainstream ideas that ignored some of the more complex and subtle phenomena of our world. They open up an entirely new genre to a higher level of art. The naturalist landscape didn’t exist before these guys.
