Medical Saddlebags, c. 1857. These saddlebags belonged to Dr. Peter Stokes (1822-1904), a graduate of the Medical College of South Carolina in 1846. Covered in black leather, each bag’s interior is lined with brown patterned fabric and contains a wooden slat frame into which medicine bottles were fitted. Before the war, Stokes practiced medicine in St. Bartholomew’s Parish (now Colleton County). In 1860 Stokes served as a delegate in the Secession Convention in 1860, was a signer of the Ordinance of Secession on December 20, and served the Confederate Army as a surgeon from 1861 to1862.

On permanent exhibit in The Charleston Museum’s City Under Siege: Charleston in the Civil War.
