This hit home for me when I first saw it.
You NEED to watch this.
wow. fucking yes please watch this.
these kids will never know what its like to not be white, but i say fuck yes for doing something.
“white peoples number one freedom in america is the freedom to be ignorant about those who are other than white and our number two freedom is the freedom to deny that we are ignorant.”
“No, don’t you see? I’m just showing how I’m so down with [minority group] that it’s totally cool for me to make jokes at their expense. Because we are just that kind of tight bros now.”
No. You cannot unlock some secret double-not-racist achievement by just being regular racist. Otherwise Bill O’Reilly would be president of the NAACP.
“But it’s a JOOOOOKE.”
Here’s the thing about jokes. They only work when they’re aiming up. I wrote this in another piece recently, but I’m just going to plagiarize myself: People in positions of power simply cannot make jokes at the expense of the powerless. That’s why, at a company party, you never have a roast where the CEO is roasting the janitor (“Isn’t it funny how Steve can barely feed his family? This guy knows what I’m talking about!” [points to other janitor]). Because that would be GROSS, and both janitors would have to work late to clean up everyone’s barf. Open-mic comedians, I know you think you’re part of some fresh vanguard in alternative comedy who just discovered that a lot of black ladies don’t like it when you touch their hair, but pleeeeeeease just stick to stuff about how your stupid girlfriend is a bitch. (Just kidding. Please never speak again.)
“So I’m not allowed to have a genuine interest in another culture?!!?!??!”
First of all, privileged dickweeds wearing Urban Outfitters “Navajo” panties, I didn’t realize that you excavated those in your anthropological field work. My bad. Carry on. And second of all, again, you “can” do whatever the fuck you want. You “can” wear whatever you want, say whatever you want, and think whatever you want about whatever you want. All the time! Yaaay! But if a group of people comes to you and says, “This thing that you are doing is hurting us,” and you keep doing it for fun, then you are a dickweed! Like, you know we had an actual genocide here, right? A deliberate extermination of human beings? Right where your house is? So maybe just err on the side of sensitivity.
The opening quote, above, was related to us by Kenneth Chamberlain Jr, when he appeared on the “Democracy Now!” news hour talking about the police killing of his father. Chamberlain Jr was holding on to the LifeAid pendant that his father wore around his neck in case of a medical emergency. Perhaps unbeknown to the White Plains police who arrived at Chamberlain Sr’s door that morning, the LifeAid system includes a box in the home that, when activated, transmits audio to the LifeAid company, where it is recorded. Chamberlain Jr and his lawyers heard the recording in a meeting at the office of the Westchester county district attorney, Janet DiFiore.
Chamberlain Jr repeated what he heard his father say on the tape: “He says, ‘I’m a 68-year-old man with a heart condition. Why are you doing this to me?’ … You also hear him pleading with the officers again, over and over. And at one point, that’s when the expletive is used by one of the police officers.” One of Chamberlain Jr’s lawyers, Mayo Bartlett, told me about the racial slur. Bartlett is a former Westchester county prosecutor, so he knows the ropes. He was explicit in recounting what he heard on the recording.
“Kenneth Chamberlain Sr said to the police, ‘I’m a sick old man.’ One of the police officers replied, ‘We don’t give a fuck, nigger!’” The recording also includes a taunt from the police, as related by Bartlett, “Open the door, Kenny, you’re a grown-ass man!” It was when Chamberlain Jr related how the police mocked his father’s military service that he broke down. “He said, ‘Semper fi.’ So they said, ‘Oh, you’re a marine. Hoo-rah. Hoo-rah.’ And this is somebody that served this country. Why would you even say that to him?” Chamberlain Jr wept as he held his father’s marine ring and veterans administration card.
there’s no need necessarily to compare it to Trayvon’s case, specifically, because for the past 200 years white people have been killing unarmed black people. and getting away with it. fuck this shit.
These posters show different white people covered in revealing truths about white privilege. According to an article in MPR news, A 2010 survey found Duluth residents viewed the city as less hospitable to racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants, young adults without children, and talented college graduates looking for work than other comparable cities. The survey ended up starting a dialogue about racial issues which facilitated a way in which to combat them. Awareness.
I may have posted this before. If I have, I don’t care. This needs to be seen again. This is a campaign designed to make white people see and check their privilege. It is so refreshing to see a group of white people who get it.
that people don’t know shit that’s racist.
And I’m horrified and shocked when they say “Also, let me know when we have ‘historically white’ colleges, fraternities, social clubs. Let me know when I can get scholarships just based on the fact that I’m white. Let me know when I can get into a school or program despite being less apt than someone else, just because I’m white. ”
But I also have to remember, I’ve come a long way and learned a lot. I am 80% sure I said some bullshit racist shit like that in high school. But why? Where did I get that from? I’m sure I heard adults joke about white history month. That shit completely fucking baffles me now, but it didn’t always. Why?
Because I grew up as a white girl; I grew up privileged. There was no one there to say to me “that’s racist” and “this is privilege” and yeah, I understood there were people who had it better off than me and people who had it worse off than me and I sort of understood there was a connection with race and poverty, but I just didn’t GET it. Why? Why is that? I wish I could go back and see that turning point.
I know I wasn’t a hateful person. And I want to blame it all on society but I can’t. It’s my job to make myself a better person and to listen to people and to read and try to understand, and all I can hope is that other people want to do the same. We need to work together to fight racism.
It’s just very tough and a sticky situation. What is the best way to go forward with someone so frustrating?
am i rambling or not making sense??
In which privileged white kids completely suck at making a point:
This is so gross. Grow the fuck up.Controversy erupts over Campus Republicans bake sale plans
- If a movement starts out being mostly made up of and led by white men, and there is no conscious, pro-active attempt to seek out and welcome women and people of color, then that movement will have a very strong tendency to continue being dominated by white men.
- People can have racist or sexist attitudes without being conscious of them. You don’t need to be a torch- wielding member of the KKK or Operation Rescue to say and think dumb things about race or gender. A lot of racism and sexism isn’t grossly overt: it’s subtle, and it’s woven so deeply into the fabric of our culture that we often aren’t aware of it until it’s called to our attention. But you can be damn well sure that the people on the receiving end of those attitudes are aware of it… and it can put them off from participating in a community that they might otherwise be drawn to.
- People have a natural tendency to focus on the issues that concern them most directly. And if a movement — however unintentionally — is being dominated by white men, then that movement will tend to focus its energies on issues that concern white men… at the expense of issues that concern women and people of color. For example, Churches provide a powerful social bond within the African community, and there seems to be no replacement for the alienation and isolation that many African-American atheists feel when they leave their churches
- I get it, Christianity is a big religion. Its top dog, but its annoying when its the only thing you focus on when trying to prove the flaws of ORGANISED RELIGION.
- Pro tip: When someone brings up the subject of racism or sexism in the atheist movement — listen
