because people are so misinformed about what feminism actually means, and they lash out that it’s “misogynistic” and reply with the super-creative response “get back in the kitchen!”
because my male friend who is gay—who has known discrimination for something he has no control over—refused to come to a women’s rights rally because “it was for girls”.
because he didn’t understand that feminism is anti-patriarchy, and that patriarchy hurts everyone.
because the abomination of “friend-zoning” is still being used by my friends on facebook. And they see no problem with it.
because people feel the need to start off sentences with “I’m by no mean a feminist, but…” — even when, after that, they defend women’s rights.
because men feel so threatened by feminism—by equal rights for women—that they lash out with even more sexism, with whining about how “unfair” it is, and completely ignoring or denying their own privilege.
because I am sick of living in a college campus of some 16,000 strong, and only a small minority came for Take Back the Night.
because I am sick of the catcalls, the crude shouts from cars, the creeps at night that make me feel unsafe.
We all need feminism.
